There's not a lot more frustrating than not being able to fall asleep, luckily we've compiled out top 5 tips to help you get the sleep that leaves you feeling refreshed in the morning.
1. Create a routine
Going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time every morning will help to reinforce your body’s sleep/wake cycle. Try aiming for 8 hours of sleep each night and making your sleep and wake times similar each day.
2. Ditch the screens
Although it’s tempting to check your socials before bed, the use of light emitting screens will stimulate your brain, making it a lot harder to drift off. If you find it hard to ditch them completely in the hours leading up to bed, try at least minimising their use in the last hour before you plan to sleep or consider turning the screen on to night mode.
3. Exercise
As if you need another reason to work up a sweat, being active (especially outside) every day can help promote sleep at night time.
4. Meditate
If you are prone to worrying, and this worry keeps you up at night, try exploring meditation. Although tricky at first, the more you practice, the easier it will be. Eventually you'll be able to isolate your thoughts which will in turn ease your anxiety. Try apps like Headspace if you're not sure where to start.
5. Check the temperature
The ideal room temperature for a night of sleep should be between 18-22 degrees. Temperatures on either side have shown to disrupt sleep. Also, studies have shown that people with insomnia sleep better in a cooler room, so check your thermostat and adjust accordingly.
Happy sleeping!
